SATURDAY, NOV. 17, '07: On Friday morning, November 16, 2007, at approximately 10 a.m., a black stallion was shot and killed in an area off the Maritime Trail of the NC Estuarine Research Reserve. In the interest of correct and timely information, I wish to share the following with all of you who share our love of the wild horses.
Two Currituck County Sheriff’s deputies responded immediately, as did the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. Two additional detectives were dispatched and a thorough investigation was conducted that lasted from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thank you to George Owens, Steve Rogers, and the Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in bringing the body out of the Reserve. It was a gruesome and arduous task. Thank you to Mark Thomas for bringing the equipment needed to move the horse into our truck. Denise Wells and I personally drove the horse to the VA Department of Agriculture in Ivor last night, where a formal necropsy will be conducted on Monday, November 19, as part of the criminal investigation.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Department is to be commended for their professionalism and skill.
I have nothing but the utmost confidence that they will continue to pursue their investigation to the fullest. There are many questions to be answered and it is premature at this stage to speculate.
The necropsy will provide the Sheriff’s Department with additional forensic information. I will update you with details as they become available. Please know that we want nothing more than to have this act of cruelty or carelessness be prosecuted to the fullest.
