‼️IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT‼️

We are very sorry to have to do this, but for everyone’s safety we are going to have to cancel tomorrow’s open house at the farm. We are doing some major fence construction that will still be on-going tomorrow. Between the equipment, debris, and post holes we just can’t risk have folks walking around the farm. So sorry to disappoint but safety has to come first.

The good news is by Thursday we are going to have brand new fencing with additional paddocks around the barn. This will give us more space for horses that are in training and/or need medical care. Corolla Wild Horse Fund

A Celebration of Life in honor of Betty Lane will be held at the Carova park on June 24 from 6pm-8pm. All are welcome as we gather to remember our dear friend and protector of the wild horses. We’ll say a few words at the beginning of the evening, and Betty asked that we all sing a couple of her favorite songs. After that we’ll eat and visit with each other while we share our memories of Betty.

Please bring some food to share if you are able to do so. There will be BBQ while it lasts, and we’ll provide water and tea as well as plates, cups, and other paper products. You may also want to bring your own chairs. Please note that alcohol is prohibited inside the park.

Corolla Outback Adventures has generously offered to provide a shuttle from the pavement to the park for those who do not have 4-wheel-drive. Please meet in the CWHF parking lot (1130E Corolla Village Road) at 5:15 if you need a ride to the park. We’d love to get a rough head count so we can add a second truck if needed. Leave a comment here or shoot us a message if you plan on using the shuttle.

Happy birthday Phoenix! 🥳 Phoenix was orphaned as a foal, and bottle raised until he was old enough to go to his new home. He now lives on a beautiful farm with fellow Banker horse Dune, a couple mini horses, and lots of sheep, cow, and dog friends too. We are so appreciative of the wonderful care he receives from his adoptive family!

The truck we rescued Phoenix in (he rode off the beach in the backseat) smelled like him until the day we sold it, despite multiple deep cleanings. Every time we got in it, especially during the summer, we would think fondly of little Phoenix. 🤣 He definitely couldn’t fit in the backseat now! Eight years have flown by and he sure has grown into a beautiful horse.

We never know when the next emergency will happen, whether it’s an injured horse or an orphaned foal, and knowing we can count on you to be there for them makes all the difference! The weather may not be cooperating, but the holiday weekend and the official start to the summer season is upon us! If you are visiting the northern beaches this weekend or any other time in the coming months, there are some important things you need to know:

You must stay 50ft away from the horses at all times! Please be respectful of their space for their safety and yours. The horses are wild and can be dangerous and unpredictable. Did you know that horses have a bite strength of 500 psi and can kick with a force of 1200 psi? That would certainly ruin your vacation! Please do not risk it.

Habituation can also be a real danger to both horses and humans. Feeding, petting, and otherwise desensitizing horses can cause them to become aggressive and pushy, and could necessitate their removal from the wild herd. Foals are especially at risk of habituation, so please give them extra space. If you have food with you, keep it in containers and be ready to pack it up and put it somewhere safe if the horses approach you. If the horses come to you, please move away and ignore them until they move on. It’s up to all of us to discourage this kind of behavior, even if that means being slightly inconvenienced for a few minutes.

If you are renting a home on the 4x4 please do not put food out for the horses. We’ve lost two horses from the herd due to people putting out apples for them, both from choking - one yearling colt died, and one we were luckily able to save but who is now gone from the wild forever. Also take care to make sure your trash cans are not overflowing, and the lids are properly secured.

If you see someone petting, feeding, or otherwise harassing the horses, please call the Currituck County non-emergency number ASAP so that a deputy can be dispatched: 252-453-3633

Before you hit the sand, take a few minutes to learn the rules and regulations for beach driving! You MUST deflate your tires - doesn’t matter if you’ve always done it a certain way, if you have a Jeep you think can handle it, etc, etc., etc. Fully inflated tires damage the beach and our fragile sand roads and ramps, and it’s not great for your vehicle either. Mind the speed limits and remember that horses, kids, and dogs can dart out in front of you a split second. Stay off the dunes (this goes for pedestrians too!) and be respectful of private property.

(And before people start commenting about how driving should be banned - that is never going to happen. The beach is the only way to access homes on the 4x4 and driving on it is an absolute necessity. Arguing about it isn’t productive, but education sure is! Please know the law, obey it, and drive safely.)

We hope everyone has a fun but safe holiday weekend! We are all responsible for taking care of this beautiful place that we love, so please be respectful and thoughtful while you are here.

Thank you for so eloquently explaining the rules and rationale for our visitors who often do not understand them. I'd like to add one more.... AWD is not the same as 4WD and often ground clearance can be an issue with the deep ruts in the sand and lower clearance vehicles.

Did a tour yesterday and we saw 14 or 15 wild Mustangs Plus a young foal. It was windy and very cool but well worth the experience.

Corolla Wild Horse Fund just had a thought. What if you have moved as far away as you can…say into the water and you can’t move away any further. And for some odd reason they still try to come up to you. Then what do you do? Playing devils advocate because I know how horses can be. I have one where if you come in his space and you don’t belong, he will come after you. Hopefully this has never happened or been the case but they are horses and you have to expect the unexpected as they are so highly unpredictable especially being wild. Our first Mustang Morning of the season is a week from today! Join us at the rescue farm in Grandy to meet the horses who live there and chat with the staff who cares for them as well as their wild counterparts. There will be a screening of the documentary "The Secret of Corolla" at 11am, and our gift shop will be fully stocked with shirts, hats, and more!

The chickens want to know why Junior is allowed to free range and they aren’t. 🤣 When you have a near death experience you get to do what you want, says Junior.

If you’ve been following us for a while you know that Junior colicked in January and had to have surgery to save his life. He is doing really well now and while he will always require extra special care he has fully recovered from the surgery and hasn’t had any additional colic episodes (knock on wood).

In the coming weeks we will be building Junior a new pasture close the barn where we can keep an eye on him, keep his life as stress-free as possible, and give him a little more room to roam around than he has in his current paddock. You can help us continue to provide Junior with the best possible life post-surgery by sponsoring him today.

We are so saddened today to share the news that our dear friend Betty Lane passed away on Saturday, May 13. A passionate protector of all wildlife for decades since moving to Carova, Betty has now gone to run with the wild horses she so dearly loved. She leaves behind many, many friends to celebrate her remarkable life.

Betty had the kind of beauty that can only come from a big heart. She was beautiful on the outside, with her sweet smile, but where her light came from was deeply routed in her heart. Her love of the horses, shined brightly with every special thing she did to make sure they were safe and respected on her watch. She will surely be missed. I am so sorry for her loss to all who loved her. 💗🐴

I loved Betty with all my heart. She was everyone’s mother. Her passing on Saturday was so heartbreaking for so many, as you see here. I will miss Betty for all my days left on this earth. We looked out our window over the park each night and watched Betty care for the park and the horses. One evening, after she had finished her work, I saw from my kitchen window , right across from the park, that two horses had walked into the vestibule of the restrooms. I quickly texted her, and lickty split, she was over there, and got them out. She sent me a photo, but I am not able to share it here. I loved her so much, along with her dogs. She was the sweetest person. There will never be another like her. I am so grateful to call her a friend. When aI look out from my kitchen window over the park, I will think of her and how much she did for our Carova community and all the wildlife. I’ve always said that I wanted to be like her.

I will never forget our morning talks while Cody and Bear played at the park. I was so blessed to know her. I walked there today… so empty without her. However she suffered greatly and always was a hard worker and hard fighter against the cancer that finally took her. I’m happy for her that her suffering is over. I’m sad for me because I miss her. I told her the last time I saw her this year that I will see her soon… until then Betty I love you. ❤️

Ms Betty, such an amazing woman and human being. A bigger heart for all Of God's nature could never be found. Ms Betty had a wealth of compassion, understanding, knowledge, empathy, gentleness, and kindness that will forever be missed.I will always treasure my many hours spent with Ms Betty. Whether we were watching over a very large deceased whale, talking about the horses, turtles, seals, life, Ms Betty always had the biggest heart and most beautiful smile. I shall miss her hugs, the I love you, watching/chatting in the park, always on the look out for who/what may need help. Our 4x4 has indeed lost an incredible lady yet her spirit lives on and shines outward through all who continue to follow in her footsteps.

Betty was a devoted supporter, advocate and volunteer for the Corolla Wild Mustangs. She did many things that were never made obvious to most people! RIP Betty! You earned your wings and jewels in heaven!

Father God I come to in prayer. Father I asked for peace comfort and wisdom for all concerned. Thank you Father God. All this I pray in Jesus name AMEN 💖

Rest in peace Mrs. Betty. . The first time I rang you up in foodlion you fussed me out for bagging your chicken wrong!! I learned how you like your things and we quickly hit it off. It was a joy talking to you when you would come in!! Gonna miss you!

Sending condolences to Laurie and her children! I met Betty over 30 years ago! She was my mother-in-law and a great friend! She was always baking and bringing gifts when she traveled from her home in Ohio to her home here in NC. Betty surely loved life and lived it fully and beautifully! I know her life changed drastically 12 years ago when she lost her husband Billy! Though we hadn't seen each other in many years we still talked on the phone! She loved her life in Carova with all the horses, dogs and many friends she met along the way. She spoke of Saving the turtles and so many things closest to her heart in our last conversation a couple months ago! I was able to send her some family photos of her grandson Ryan and his son Brantley! She seemed delighted and curious to know and see more! We spoke of her love for her beloved Billy who she kept alive in her heart! She always spoke of Laurie and her two children! There was not a time she didn't have an upbeat attitude or was willing to lean a helping hand! I will cherish our last conversation and know she understood my love and admiration for her! As her song on her phone would say "Wild Horses couldn't keep me Away!" I know she must of been smiling to be reunited with Billy and I'm sure together they will walk hand in hand along the Seashore! Admiring all mother nature's beauty! Fly high Betty! You are Loved and as I see on here will be so greatly missed!

An amazing woman. I met her on one of my trips up and she was as Fiesty as a chestnut banker mare she protected

I used to enjoy talking with Betty when I lived there. Special lady, she will be missed.

If you are visiting the 4x4 beach on this beautiful Saturday please remember to stay 50ft away from the horses at all times. Feeding, petting, approaching, or harassing them is illegal and will result in a hefty fine. Habituated horses are a danger to themselves and humans, and at risk of removal from the herd.

If you witness someone breaking the law, please call 252-453-3633 so that a deputy can be dispatched to the scene.

People we are visiting their home, please respect them! Give them a chance of survival! They are beautiful wild horses! Slow down, admire from a distance, leave them alone, so we can continue to visit them!

All that and 2 important words SLOW DOWN.

I was just there last week and the wild horse tours were pulling right up next to them and stopping. They’re supposed to know better.

What should we do if they approach us on the beach, trying to rummage through food?

I was fortunate to see the horses this week. Just so beautiful!! I wish I knew their names.

Are you looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift? Our friend Michael Middleton (Middleton Clay Project) has a series of pots available right now made with native Currituck clay and hair from Moxie aka Chaos, the matron of the Dews Island herd.

Moxie is probably close to 30 years old now, and lives at our sanctuary farm on the mainland. She was part of the original group of horses that were moved from Corolla to Dews Island in 1999 after the fence was constructed. They were the infamous Food Lion horses - they learned the doors would open automatically and would go inside to help themselves to the produce section! Her name back then was Chaos for a good reason. 😉

Moxie has produced a lot of foals over the years and is one of our foundation dams. She is a grand old lady and a very important part of the Corolla Banker history. These pots are so special, and definitely one-of-a-kind just like Moxie. Get them while they last!

That's a hilarious story about the food lion horses. I remember them in the parking lot all time! Beautiful pottery!!
