Had a really nice visit to Island Farm today! Two of our favorite Banker mares, Grace and Rainbow, call the historic farm home.

Rainbow was rescued out of the wild as a youngster due to an injury, and Grace was born on Dews Island. Now they are both an important part of the farm’s mission to show what life was like on Roanoke Island in the 19th century. In addition to the horses, visitors can meet the other animals, tour the restored house and outbuildings, and see demonstrations from costumed interpreters.

Next month the farm’s pumpkin patch will be open on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th from 9am - 3pm. 🎃🐴

Cattle egrets, clouds, and cool temps - maybe not a great beach day but you don’t hear the locals complaining. 😉 The horses are already getting fuzzy for the winter and those 85° degree days we’ve had the last couple weeks have been pretty uncomfortable for them. The egrets won’t be around much longer but they were busy today eating the flies and other bugs the horses kick up while they graze. Everyone is enjoying the transition into Fall! 🍂

A year ago today we took June out of the wild after she contracted pythiosis. This water-borne infection is deadly if not treated quickly and aggressively. We’ve had four cases in the herd since 2020 - two survived (Riptide and June) and two did not (Lizzie and Ceres).

June went to North Carolina State University on September 8, 2022 and was immediately taken into surgery to begin treatment and remove the lesion caused by the infection. She was an excellent patient (she is very laid back and sensible) and that, combined with exceptional veterinary care and maybe just a little bit of luck, saved her life. She stayed at the hospital for about a month before coming home to Grandy to finish her recovery.

Today June is happy and healthy, with no major lasting issues from the pythiosis. Her hoof was damaged by the infection, but over the last year it’s been growing out healthy thanks to regular corrective trimming. This summer June practiced being an ambassador horse during our farm open houses, and we hope that maybe next year she can actually go off the farm for events. We plan on starting June under saddle over the winter too. On the farm she lives with Junior, who she also lived with for nearly her entire adult life in the wild, and Buttercup. If you came to an open house over the summer you probably saw them standing in front of their fans inside the barn.

Number 7! 🤩

This handsome chestnut colt is a couple months old, but his family are of the swampy sort and haven’t been out where any humans can see them since he was born. Our staff spotted him last week, but at a pretty far distance. Then today his mom decided to come down to the beach (the flies are awful!) and he made his official debut. Welcome to the herd, Dash!

Dash’s mom is named Rotor because the first time we saw her was from the helicopter in 2017 when she was a foal. She’s not one that is seen often and as far as we know he is her first foal. Last year she was with Càdiz’s harem for a while and she really, really wanted to steal him away from his mom. Now she’s got one of her own and clearly has been an excellent mother to Dash!

The marsh is bountiful this time of year and the horses take full advantage of it! The Bankers are just as much at home knee-deep in the sound as they are on the sand dunes. They’ve had hundreds of years to adapt to this unique environment and it’s always really exciting to see those adaptations at work. Doe is getting a great education from her mother and the other adults in their harem!

Hope everyone is taking a page out of Junior and June’s book today and staying cool and hydrated. The heat index in Grandy was 108°. 🥵 But, storms are rolling through now and tomorrow is supposed to be much more comfortable. Come visit these two and the rest of the herd during our open house from 10am-2pm!

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Chris Winter as Chief Executive Officer, effective July 31, 2023.

Founded in 2001, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund’s nonprofit mission is to protect, conserve, and responsibly manage the herd of Corolla wild horses (Bankers) roaming freely on the northernmost Currituck Outer Banks, and to promote the continued preservation of this land as a permanent sanctuary for horses designated as the State Horse and defined as a cultural treasure by the state of North Carolina.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Corolla Wild Horse Fund’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of the Fund’s mission and desired impact. The CEO will adhere to the Fund’s Strategic Action Plan and the implementation of the Wild Horse Management Agreement. As CEO, Chris will represent the Fund to the public, fostering important partnerships with key organizations, all government agencies, community and business leaders, and other relevant stakeholders. Through his work, Chris will develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies.

Spending much of his career in the nonprofit world, Chris Winter brings more than 11 years of nonprofit executive-level experience to the position. Most recently, Chris was President and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina. Before Make-A-Wish, Chris worked as the Director of Development for Living Water International. This faith-based nonprofit organization helps communities in developing countries to create sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. Chris cares about the world around him and will bring exciting new energy to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.

Is this a new position or a reorg?

Amen to removing motor vehicles

Let’s see if Chris Winter can implore horse tour company vehicles to adhere to the “Maintain a 50’ distance from horses” regulation. None of the past CWHF officials have been able to do so. The stress factor of multiple tour vehicles surrounding mares and foals happens on a daily basis.

The time has arrived to get the motor vehicles off the beach !

In a brief interview with the Voice, Wild Horse Fund Chief Operating Officer Jo Langone indicated that the organization was undergoing “a bit of a restructure,” noting that she will be moving elsewhere for a brief period of time and that a new operations coordinator is being hired. “I’m transitioning,” she said, before declaring that “I will always remain a strong advocate for the horses.”

I agree it is time to start restricting motor vehicles. Unfortunately, you can't do anything about the people who live there. BUT you can start working with the municipalities about limiting the tourist vehicles. For the horses and the environment, when you see common sense gone and vehicles being washed away, horses hit and killed and no one held accountable.

Around 7:30 this morning we received a call from a resident about a horse that had been struck by a vehicle. After arriving on the scene our veterinarian determined that the mare, named Cora Mae, had fractured her tibia in multiple places. She was humanely euthanized.

The driver of the vehicle also notified the sheriff’s department and a deputy was dispatched. Statements were taken and a report was filed, but please understand that this was truly a terrible accident and all parties involved are devastated. We ask that people please be respectful as all of us - including the driver of the vehicle - cope with this loss.

Cora Mae was in her teens, and one of the top producing mares on the beach. In recent years, she foaled Liberty, Valor, Riptide, Bravo, and Cosmos. She was an excellent mother and her offspring are all extremely well-bred. Cora’s loss will have a significant, lasting impact on the wild population.

There is some comfort in knowing that Liberty, Bravo, and Cosmos are still in the wild and will hopefully sire their own foals in the coming years. Riptide was removed from the wild in 2020 when he contracted pythiosis, and now lives on the CWHF farm on the mainland. At four years old, he is our best ambassador/outreach horse, has been started under saddle, and we have plans to potentially breed him next year. We sadly lost Valor in 2020 at the age of two due to an infected tendon sheath.

Cosmos turns a year old on September 15 and while this isn’t the way we like to see foals weaned, he is old enough to survive on his own. He is still with his dad Surfer who will take excellent care of him as long as they stick together. We will be keeping a very close eye on him and will intervene if it seems like he’s struggling, but as of right now we are hopeful that he will acclimate just fine.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped us take care of Cora Mae today. We are so grateful for the quick, compassionate response from our community, our staff, and our veterinarian.

You were a good girl, Cora Mae. Rest easy now. 💜
