With only a couple hundred left in the world, the Bankers are recognized as a critically threatened, endangered breed. DNA research has confirmed that the Bankers are indeed direct descendants of the horses originally brought to North America by the Spanish in the 1500s and they have remained isolated on our barrier islands for hundreds of years, preserving their genetics and earning them a place in the very fibers of our culture and history here in North Carolina.

As the herd faces more modern threats to their survival - encroachment, environmental changes due to climate change, a decreased herd size, etc. - the role that CWHF plays in their management has become increasingly critical. We must balance habitat preservation, breed conservation, and accessibility (we want people to be able to come see them - safely and respectfully!) to ensure that a thriving wild herd remains here for many more generations. We must also provide a safe haven for those that must be removed from the wild herd due to the challenges listed above. It is important to remain positive about the future while still acknowledging the very real dangers the herd faces.

Nothing makes more of an impact than having an up close and personal experience with one of these special horses, and our education and outreach programs allow people the chance to do that in a safe and respectful way. The horses who live at our mainland farm are ambassadors for their wild relatives, and play an important role in our efforts to educate the public about our work. Just because a horse is removed from the wild doesn’t mean that its story has ended! In addition to open houses at the farm, we often take horses off the property to schools and community events across northeastern North Carolina (and sometimes beyond!). Our goal is to keep these programs free and accessible, and your continued support means that we can achieve this goal. Education is power!

Yesterday Junior refused to come out of his stall and get wet in the rain while Raymond spent the entire day pretending to be The Swamp Thing (yes that’s mud he’s covered head to tail in). Our differences are what make the world go ’round.

In a herd of only 100 horses, every single individual matters.

The Bankers are a highly-threatened, critically endangered breed and the conservation of those rare and invaluable genetics are at the forefront of all the work that we do. Not only do we have to maintain a population of horses in the wild, we need to ensure that they are genetically healthy and will continue to thrive here for generations to come. We maintain individual files on each horse, and these records include identification photos, foaling history for mares, a log of injuries or illnesses, DNA, associations, and any other relevant management information. Each horse is assigned a registration number and kept track of from birth to death. Our staff is on the beach seven days a week observing the horses. They record latitude and longitude coordinates for tracking and habitat use purposes, behaviors like fighting, grazing, or breeding, weather conditions, and more.

The more we know about how these horses spend their days, the better equipped we will be to save them.

The county needs to stop building in that area. Doesn’t bother me to see those over priced houses washed away. More room for the horses and other wildlife.

This morning we are sad to announce the death of 11-year-old wild stallion Finn, who we humanely euthanized yesterday due to an irreparably broken hind leg.

Finn had been observed fighting with other stallions on Friday, and then unable/unwilling to move Friday night and into Saturday. Upon closer inspection, it was obvious that his leg was badly broken and under the direction of our veterinarian we captured him so that we could help end his suffering. Finn’s injuries were completely in line with those commonly sustained from fighting, and there is no reason to believe he was injured by human means (hit by a vehicle, etc).

While it is a devastating loss for those of us who cared for Finn and who will miss him dearly, what happened to him is nature in its most basic, wild, and unforgiving form. Finn died as wild as he was born; he lived a truly free life and that is something we should take comfort in.

As we go into spring and summer, Finn’s death should serve as a reminder of how wild and dangerous these horses are. It’s breeding season and stallions absolutely do not care if you are in the way when they are fighting. You will get trampled, kicked, bit, or worse. Stay at least 50 feet away from them at all times and always be aware of your surroundings. Fights can break out in a split second, and their movements can be unpredictable and quick. Please give these horses the respect they deserve - for their own safety and yours.

A year ago today we rescued Brio, and it’s hard to believe he’s the same colt that we unloaded off the trailer that day. When we got him to the farm he was starving and had pneumonia, his growth had been severely stunted, he was emotionally shut down, and probably wouldn’t have lasted another day on his own in the wild.

Today Brio is a normal, healthy almost-two-year-old, with lots of friends and a bright future ahead of him! He lives in a large field with Arrow, Squirt, and Buster, who are great role models and take very good care of him. His hoof and muscle issues have been corrected and while he’s still on the smaller side for a Corolla horse, he’s grown quite a bit in the year that he’s lived with us. He is turning into quite the looker with his lovely movement and flashy markings. Our only plans for him right now are to let him keep growing and maturing, but the sky really is the limit for what this colt could do in the future. One day he may be started under saddle, and he will definitely be a great outreach horse and ambassador for his breed.

Unfortunately we do now believe that Brio’s mom Monkey passed away, orphaning him. We don’t know what happened to her and probably never will. But at least we were able to save her son, and maybe one day he will produce offspring of his own so that her genetics won’t be lost forever.

This may be a dumb question, but when you bring new horses to the farm (like Brio), are the other horses initially aggressive or territorial until they get used to the new horse? I guess a better question is, do you have to socialize them over time so they get used to each other?

He is a beauty! Really developing that classy stallion mannerism too! I’m curious, though, why do you think his mom died, other than maybe not seeing her recently?

She’s so beautiful. I remember when she was just a little thing.

I actually see this behavior in the herds at Mt Rogers. The older mares will push a young filly out when she is around 2 … usually another stallion claims her when she comes into first heat. Then the mares in his herd will gradually accept the new “wife” but it takes a while … I’m thinking this is a natural way to prevent inbreeding Corolla Wild Horse Fund

I moved to the OBX last year & definitely felt Pollenpocalypse! I’ve never seen it float through the air like it does here😂

Yup sums it up! Here in KY we like to say if you don't like the weather...wait 24 hrs and it will be different. We can have all 4 seasons in one day!

4 or 5 mnths straight summer...we started early this year, remember? So pollen season shoud start about March 1

Quick little update on Junior - he is doing great! Thank you to everyone who has helped support him through his illness, surgery, and ongoing recovery. And an extra special thank you to our friend Laurel, who is one of Junior’s sponsors and did a presentation for her 4H club a couple days ago about the wild horses and why it’s so important that we all work together to keep them safe. Junior and the rest of the horses are lucky to have all of you!🐴💜
